"You have lived alone for far too long, Mister Diamond.  But I can show you the way; you can be reborn, just as I was."

_____

My officially headcannon believes that Double Diamond was Starlight Glimmer's first convert.  If you go back to the premiere, he was her number 1 lackey all throughout:  he was one of the first to greet the Mane 6 to the town, he always kept tabs on the townsponies so they stayed in line, and just about anywhere Starlight went he was not far behind, always at the corner of the frame.  She clearly trusted him the most, to send him off alone to the Cutie Mark Vault to retrieve the Mane 6's stolen marks for her. He was an undesignated, but extremely loyal, assistant, and he was probably a big cog that kept the machine going.

I like to think, too, that he was integral to starting her cult in the first place, attracting people to the little town, swaying them alongside Starlight, and, if we took this into a darker place, participated in the "initiation" of some of the less willing converts - assuming there were any.  I imagine most ponies who ended up in the town were pretty lonely, miserable people, if they were so attracted by this message of harmony and peace through equality despite Starlight's questionable methods.  It's definitely a very scary idea that some people out there are more than happy to play with our insecurities for their own benefits, and moreso that they can condition their victims to take the abuse or even participate in it.

Double Diamond is still awesome pony though, shadowed only by Party Favor due to epic balloon-art powers.
Why does Starlight wear a severed noose?  I thought it'd look cool... there's definitely no deeper, darker reason behind it.  Not.  At.  All.  :icondatassplz:

Now, for the technicals: I experimented a LOT with this piece.  Layering techniques for the background, layer filtering and blur effects, perspective between the two subjects to give the impression of depth, and overall shot composition to try and make it feel more "cinematic" in 1080p resolution.  I even decided to go for a tried-and-true shading style this time: cell shading.  I wanted this scene to feel more like something you might find in an animation, and cell shading is a really big part of that.

Still, I have a long way to go before I can strike that sweet cinema spot well.  And this piece took so many more hours than it really should have... then again, ain't that always the case? X3

I can honestly say though that I'm really happy with this one - more than the last landscape piece I made.  ^u^

I seem to think that Double Diamond was the one in the village that was closest to Starlight and likely had a crush on her. I seem to ship them together for some reason.
